High quality sleep is a core element of the Mr. Happy Lifestyle. Let's explore why sleep matters so much to men like us, and what actions we can take right now to improve the quality of our sleep.Why does the quality of our sleep matters so much?
Although an occasional sleepless night usually does not pose much of a problem, running a sleep deficit over time will cause a lot of problems. Restorative sleep is an essential ingredient for a healthy mind and body, and every bodily system will suffer for lack of it. Even the best energy supplement can't take the place of quality sleep.
Many people think of sleep as a waste of time or a luxury. We buy into this odd notion that successful people get by with just a few hours of sleep a night or that sleep is “unproductive” time. Clearly these are the thoughts of a foggy, sleep-deprived mind.
An inadequate amount of quality sleep not only adversely affects brain health (retention, judgment, and reaction time), but also damages our overall health by weakening our immune system. Proper sleep is a fundamental necessity of your body. Since we often push our body to its limits on a daily basis, it needs adequate time to recharge, recover, and rejuvenate.What is sleep?
There are two phases of sleep: Rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (non-REM). The various brain activities underway during different stages of sleep are as distinct from each other as they are from wakefulness, and each of them serve a critical purpose for brain health and bodily restoration.
Non-REM sleep consists of four stages, which range from light dozing to deep sleep. Throughout this state of sleep, muscle activity is still functional, breathing is low, and brain activity is minimal. Approximately 75 percent of the sleep cycle is spent in non-REM sleep. Simple thought processes may be reported if you are awakened in any stage of non-REM sleep, however you will likely not recall any specific dream. The non-REM “deep sleep” stage in the sleep cycle is absolutely essential for our body to regenerate and recharge, and to strengthen our immune system. Key processes such as repair and growth of muscle and tissues, immunity, and energy production all require quality deep sleep to take place.
REM sleep typically occupies 20% - 25% of total sleep among adults, so during a normal night’s sleep we usually experience about four or five periods of REM sleep. These periods are short at the beginning of the night and longer toward the end. During REM, the activity of our brain's neurons is similar to that during waking hours. REM sleep is physiologically different from the phases of non-REM sleep. Vividly recalled dreams mostly occur during REM sleep, as do nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT).
While non-REM sleep recharges our body, nightly REM sleep recharges our mind by strengthening neural pathways, especially those related to memory, and boosts our brain’s healthy supply of key mood-balancing neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine. What are my best strategies to improve my sleep?
First of all, consciously mange your levels of avoidable stress since there is a strong connection between sleep and stress. Try not to "stress over" matters that you will likely neither remember nor care about two weeks from now. (Tips on Stress Reduction
Secondly, understand the domino or ripple effect in play here. For example, managing stress helps with sleep. Quality sleep helps us to manage stress. Exercise reduces stress and helps us to sleep better. The better nourished we are, the better we are able to manage stress and the better sleep we will get. And so on.
And thirdly, here are some actions you can take right now to improve your quality of sleep:
- One of the simplest solutions to poor sleep is turning off all lights and electronic devices.
- Make sure the room is completely dark, so that you cannot see your hand in front of your face.
- Keep electric clocks with their digital displays at least 3 feet away from your head.
- Take the TV out of the bedroom. This one can be difficult, but it makes a big difference. While you may think that watching TV helps you go to sleep, the opposite is actually true. Some other white noise, like a fan or sounds of ocean waves, can serve the same purpose without lowering melatonin and interfering with deep sleep.
- Establish regular sleep and wake schedules, even on weekends. When it comes to sleep, your body craves consistency.
- Consider creating a regular, relaxing bedtime routine—which you should begin an hour or more before the time you expect to fall asleep—such as taking a hot shower or listening to soothing music.
- Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. And opt for natural fabric as bed sheets—cotton or wool is good.
- Use your bedroom for sleep and sex only. Keep "sleep stealers" (e.g., watching TV, using a computer, or reading in bed) out of the bedroom. And definitely have more sex.
- Finish eating at least 2 to 3 hours before your regular bedtime.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime.
- If you get up often at night to urinate, stop drinking fluids, including water, 3 hours before bedtime.
- Try a melatonin dietary supplement. Many high quality options are readily available.
If you follow these recommendations, but still are struggling with sleep, see a doctor. It is important to pinpoint the deeper cause behind your insomnia.
Sleep must be a priority. We can get away with one or two late nights, but on the third night, we need to pay back the sleep time lost.
We should schedule sleep like any other daily activity: put it on our "to-do list" and cross it off every night. Make it a priority. Let’s give our body a chance to recharge. Let’s not needlessly compromise our immune system.

When I was formulating and testing the XYVGGR® Blend that is Mr. Happy, my friends boasted on how well P-boost worked and asked how ours compared to “the magic of P-boost.”
Remember, a nice “side effect” of Mr. Happy is improved sexual health and function.* There was so much hype about this other product that I wondered what was in P-boost.
In fact, I looked at over one hundred male sexual health supplements when formulating Mr. Happy just to make sure it would be a unique, effective, and necessary dietary supplement, since there is no need to “re-invent the wheel."
Also it was crucially important to focus on the health aspect of male potency and to address all the organ systems involved including the vascular and cardiovascular system. P-boost makes claims that it works on the first dose – and friends agreed.
Anything that sounds too good to be true generally is and in the world of sexual products even more so. I suspected that P-boost contained pharmaceutical agents in it and that’s why it worked so fast.
Bingo! Just recently, P-boost was removed from the market because it contained the pharmaceutical known as Tadanafil (see FDA Notice). And yes, this is criminal, and begs for further work by our industry to flush out its "bad players."
Caveat Emptor et Sapias
As a rule of thumb, dietary supplements do not work instantaneously. They generally take about one to two weeks to have an effect. They also should have systemic benefits, and not only improve one area of the body. So, as in the case of P-boost, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
The sexual benefits of Mr. Happy build with time. It’s not event driven. Clinically, I notice that it takes about a week or so of daily use before experiencing satisfactory blood flow to sexual organs. Even more importantly, Mr. Happy supports stamina, nourishes blood vessels, and improves your production of Nitric Oxide which in turn further improves blood flow.*
Choose credible manufacturers before buying dietary supplements and do not expect immediate “home runs” when consuming them. Be suspicious of "magic in a bottle" claims. And understand that there is no short cut for improving your sexual health and vitality.
Only by eating nourishing foods, exercising vigorously, making smart lifestyle choices, and consuming high quality dietary supplements will you earn your results, defy your age, and reclaim the sexual vigor that you once enjoyed.

The benefits of exercise cannot be overstated and are far reaching. This is why improving your fitness level is a key to anti-aging for men, and to reclaiming your health and quality of life.
As encouragement, I want to quickly share with you a recent experience. Several months ago, I made and lost a friendly wager with my 11 year old that resulted in us buying and doing the Insanity Workout program together.
The program is aptly named. Actually, the name is a bit of an understatement. It is beautifully designed and produced. It is a remarkable challenge and experience, and an accomplishment to complete it. Some quick comments:
- Did you know that underneath your “love handles” are something called oblique muscles? I am not kidding.
- Did you know that when burning calories, your abdominal muscles become ice cold to the touch? I now have a new definition of what is a cold 6-pack.
- Did you know that daily exercise not only builds your fitness level, but discourages habits that are at odds with optimal health?
As I progressed through the 2-month program, I noticed my craving for things like caffeine, chocolate, and red wine went away. My already-sound diet improved even more. My stress levels were reduced. And my quality of sleep improved. In other words, choices that we make ripple across every aspect of our overall health and well being.
Am I recommending that you do the Insanity Workout? As brilliant as it is, and as grateful as I am to the fine company behind it: it depends. I love it and will continue with it, but if you are over 40 and out of shape, perhaps you should view this particular program as something that you will want to build towards as a goal. And it is a great goal to pursue.
What I am recommending and encouraging you to do is to take your current fitness level up a notch or two. If you are sedentary, then start with a 30-minute walk 6 days a week. If you are fairly fit for your age, but know that you have plenty of room for improvement, then shake things up and get after it.
Find something or a combination of things that you enjoy, and do it 6 days a week. Seek balance between cardiovascular and resistance training, perhaps alternating daily between the two. Join a gym. Hire a trainer. Buy a bike. Order a home fitness program. Just do something. And do it now. No excuses.
Make fitness a habit. Like all new habits, good or bad, daily repetition leads to a craving that needs to be fed daily. Why not make exercise that new habit? Fitness is a lifestyle choice, and is an effective anti-aging strategy for men and women.
It is also a far better solution to your “mid-life crisis” than any combination of sports cars, gold chains, and co-eds. And I suspect that your spouse or significant other will heartily agree. Go ahead and ask if you are not sure.
Get more rooster back into your daily life. Every day presents us with an opportunity to improve our health and quality of life. Let's take full advantage of it. Like I am, you will be glad that you did.

Did you know that on any given day, only 5% of the US adult population exercise? We are not talking about training for a triathlon; we are talking about any form of moderate exertion. Not surprisingly, by 2015 it is estimated that 75% of Americans will be overweight, with 40% of us being classified as obese. We are damaging our future through poor lifestyle choices.
How can any healthcare system work in such an environment? How can you fully enjoy your life as a man if you are not physically fit enough to take full advantage of it?
Not preaching. Not lecturing. Just saying.
We encourage you to make healthy lifestyle choices, which include improving your fitness level by incorporating some form of exercise into your daily life. But the choice is yours alone. But before you decide, just so you know, when you exercise, the payoff is pretty spectacular:
- Improved endurance
- Increased energy
- Increased strength
- Improved immune system function
- Increased regeneration of healthy cells
- Improved muscle tone
- Reduced stress level
- Improved sleep
- Improved mental clarity
- Improved mood and outlook
- Reduced body fat
- Lower blood pressure
- Lower resting heart rate
- Improved self-esteem
- Increased engagement with life
- More fun!
In addition, through exercise you flood your body with “feel-good” chemicals such as dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin and adrenaline, which then remain elevated in your blood stream for up to 24 hours. Not a bad deal, eh? We are not suggesting that you begin to train for a marathon or triathlon, although Mr. Happy will be happy to sponsor you if you do! (OK, maybe “sponsor” is a bit strong; we are thinking a free t-shirt or two.)
Instead, assess where you are today in terms of fitness and build from there. Find some form of exercise that you enjoy and do it. Daily.
Sedentary? Then start with a daily 15-20 minute walk. Anything and everything will help. The key is to get started. Today. In coming weeks, we will share with you some more thoughts on how you might want to construct a sensible exercise program, one that is appropriate for your age, health, and interests.
But do not wait for us. Instead, get started and get moving right now since every day is an opportunity for you to improve your energy, strengthen your immune system, and ramp up your health and quality of life.
There is a connection between fitness and happiness, so why not make that connection in your life? And get more Rooster in your life.
