I am not the Dos Equis guy, but we do share certain passions in life.
Along with Dr. Geo Espinosa, in 2010 I founded XY Wellness as a means to give men a better range of options following the diagnosis of and treatment for prostate cancer. Why? As a survivor, I wanted to give back by building a company able to make a difference for many.
We set out to treat the entire man, something in stark contrast to the medical industry's focus on simply treating the effected organ. Also in contrast, we set out to be both proactive and integrative in our approach to improving the medical prognosis and quality of life of our customers.
Through this work, we brought to market the XYVGGR Proprietary Blend that comprises Mr. Happy (and its professional line packaging for health care providers known as XYVGGR). The improved quality of life results have been remarkable based on testimonials from men (and those who love them) and from continually increasing sales.
We must be doing something right, eh? Part of it is that we encourage a smart, easy to follow lifestyle that supports your ability to make your best days, experiences, and laugh out loud "war stories" ahead of you ... and not in the past.
This is the core principle of the Mr. Happy lifestyle: let's embrace all that life as a man has to offer us and ensure that our best days are ahead of us. Too many of us men settle in to middle age, and then wonder what happened to that sense of fun and adventure that they recall from earlier days.

Basketball is my favorite sport. I like all levels of basketball: college, professional, Olympic, even high school. Here in New York City, high school basketball is big, and as a result, we praise any high school kid who is really good at the sport and follow their career.
One such player is Lamar Odom, who was a high school phenomenon at Christ the King high school in Queens, New York during the late ‘90s. He went on to have respectable a 10-year career on the NBA, although he may be better known to the masses as Khloe Kardashian’s ex-husband. Three days ago, he was found unconscious with white material oozing out of his mouth at a brothel near Las Vegas, Nevada.
Today, October 15, 2015 he is on life support at a hospital in Nevada.
Lamar Odom’s story is perplexing, tragic and simply sad. He has had a long history of addiction and substance abuse. What happened on October 13, 2015 that sent him to (what might possibly be) his death bed?
What we know:
Odom was snorting cocaine before a near fatal fall. He also took 10 tablets of “natural” sexual energy pills called Reload.
What’s scary about Reload is that the FDA issued a warning that this unnatural supplement contains sildenafil (Viagra) hidden in the ingredients list on the label:
Cocaine is a stimulant, causes the heart to beat faster and increases blood pressure. That level of stress to cardiovascular system can lead to a heart attack. Combining Viagra with cocaine can tear the body’s main artery, the aorta, which reduces blood to the brain. The overall outcome is often a stroke.
How big of a problem is the sexual supplement industry?
A very big problem. Virtually 25% or about 300 supplement formulas of sexual enhancement supplements are tainted with either Viagra, Cialis or Levitra.
This is a very big problem for two main reasons:
- Taking ED pharmaceuticals unknowingly can be deadly as they cause widening of the arteries. This can be harmless and even beneficial in moderation, but too much can lead to low blood pressure. Excessively low blood pressure stresses the heart.
- The bad publicity also stains the good players in the supplement industry, those who make legitimate and safe sexual health supplements.
Effective (truly natural) dietary supplements are not event driven; instead, their benefits accrue over time. Clinically, I notice that it takes about a week or so of daily use before experiencing satisfactory blood flow to sexual organs. A responsible sexual health formula gradually builds stamina, nourishes blood vessels, and improves your production of nitric oxide, which improves blood flow.
How to spot drug-tainted sexual performance supplements:
- If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.
- Avoid supplements that claim to make your penis bigger. No dietary supplement does that.
- Avoid anything sold in small packets of 2 to 10 pills.
- Avoid anything with an FDA warning similar to those found on ED drugs. For example, “do not use with nitrates” or “do not use if you have heart disease or high blood pressure.”
- Avoid supplements that promise fast results. No natural agent or combination of agents work that fast.
What should you do?
Buy supplements from trustworthy manufacturers, and do not expect immediate “home runs” when consuming them. Be suspicious of "magic in a bottle" claims. Understand that there is no short cut for improving your sexual health and vitality.
Only by eating nourishing foods, exercising vigorously, making smart lifestyle choices, and consuming high-quality dietary supplements will you earn your results, defy your age, and reclaim the sexual vigor that you once enjoyed.

Dr. Geo wants to share his perspective on the unarguable benefits of exercise and general fitness with this excerpt from his upcoming book:
We are simply not made to sit for long periods. We are built to move. Humans need to exercise, plain and simple. It does not matter what exercise you choose as long as you do something. However, the key is to get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself.
You may already be familiar with many of the common benefits of regular exercise—lower stress, weight loss, better sleep, and a plenty of other advantages. However, in terms of prostate cancer, research has shown that fitness can help you reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer, prevent it from returning, or lower the chance of you dying from it.
Also, you can overcome common side effects from treatments, and even lower your risk of dying from other causes. Don’t forget—while prostate cancer can indeed be deadly, many men with prostate cancer pass away from something else, but live the rest of their life in constant worry about their PSA levels.
Remember, it is not only about how many years you live, but also how you live those years. Here is a look at the key reasons exercise is so crucial for fighting prostate cancer.
1. Improve insulin sensitivity
For starters, exercise helps to improve insulin sensitivity. When you engage in intense exercise, your muscles gobble up excess sugar in your bloodstream for energy without the need for extra insulin produced by the pancreas. With less insulin, and thus less sugar-‐energy, cancer cells are deprived of the fuel it demands. A big part of creating a hostile cancer environment is to starve cancer cells of their energy .So every time you engage in high-‐intense exercise, you help to kill cancer cells by starving them of sugar.
2. Improves the function of your “sewage” system
Regular exercise also improves the function of your lymphatic system, which is a complex network of organs, lymph nodes, lymph ducts, and lymph vessels that make and move lymph fluid from tissues to the bloodstream. Essentially, your lymphatic is your body’s sewage system where all the junk and toxins get moved into before they eventually get removed from the body. A smooth running lymphatic system, where much of the built-‐up crap is taken out, is yet another means to create the thriving healthy environment that is hostile on cancer cells.
There are two main ways to improve the movement of your lymphatic system: deep breathing and muscle contraction. As you huff and puff and muscles tighten, lymph vessels are squeezed (in a milking type of way) and your body’s “junk” in the lymph fluid is pushed along, filtered through lymph nodes bringing back clean fluid to the veins and the heart. It is important to keep the lymph fluid moving smoothly in order to efficiently move out waste, and working your muscles is the best way to do that.
3. Keep your body weight low
Exercise also helps maintain a healthy weight and keeps your body fat low, both of which can reduce your chances of prostate cancer recurrence and lowers your risk of dying from prostate cancer. Increasing evidence suggests that obesity (either before or at the time of diagnosis) is strongly associated with prostate cancer progression and prostate-‐cancer-‐specific mortality. A 2011 study among 2,546 men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer found that a one-‐unit increase in body mass index (BMI) was associated with approximately 10 percent increase in the risk of prostate cancer death, and BMI of at least 30 kg/m2 was associated with a nearly two-‐fold increased risk. Keep your weight under control and you can better beat prostate cancer for good.
But at the center of movement is time and effort. You need to devote equally to both to be successful. An easy way to incorporate regular exercise into your life is to schedule it like you do so many other events in your life. I mean be serious about your fitness. Put it into your daily calendar like you would schedule a business lunch or meeting with your most important client. Commit to it like if you have a meeting with your boss who is going to offer you a 20 percent raise. You would not think of blowing off those appointments, would you? Give your training the same respect. If you want to live your best life, you have to respect your body and give it the attention it needs, everyday.

If you have not heard the news, Leonard Nimoy died a few days ago (27 Feb 2015) in his home at the age of 83. He was best known for his portrayal of Mr. Spock in the Star Trek TV series and related films. According to his wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, his death was caused by end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Nimoy’s condition consisted of blockages in his lungs (hence, “obstructive pulmonary”) that he himself attributed to a smoking habit. In healthy lungs, oxygen-rich air flows through the lungs’ bronchial tubes into thousands of tiny tubes called bronchioles; it continues to smaller sacs called alveoli, which pass oxygen to capillaries filled with blood. Due to Nimoy’s smoking habit, his bronchioles became stiff, inflamed, and clogged with mucus. During his final year of life, his lungs could not provide his body with enough oxygen to survive.
Despite this condition late in Nimoy’s life, he did not die a smoker. In fact, he had quit the habit thirty years before. That’s right: quitting smoking added thirty years to his life. And this was not just Nimoy’s luck. Research published in the American Journal of Public Health confirms that quitting smoking at any age dramatically improved life expectancy (Taylor et al., 2002). In this study, men who quit at age 35 extended their life expectancy by almost nine years. Even quitting at age 65, ten years older than Nimoy when he quit, can add a few years to your life.
We derive our advice today from Nimoy’s own words. On January tenth, Nimoy tweeted, “Don't smoke. I did. Wish I never had. LLAP [Live Long and Prosper].” We repeat this wisdom: do not smoke. It will damage your lungs; it will prevent you from breathing; it will kill you. Not only does COPD shorten your life, but it makes those final years full of pain when they could be full of vitality. Nimoy enjoyed more than three decades of life after his decision to quit smoking. If you currently have a smoking habit, we advise that you follow Nimoy’s lead and quit now. December 31 2014 It is easy to be cynical about New Year’s resolutions, but in our experience few if any great accomplishments or people have cynicism as a characteristic. Mr. Happy men have no interest in being cynical.
Studies have shown that only one in five people actually achieve their resolutions to diet or improve their relationships (Norcross & Vangarelli, 1988). But achieving a resolution is not as unlikely as it seems. It does not take a special kind of person to make a resolution a reality, but it does take a special kind of mindset. What makes this mindset unique is that it’s realistic.
When people hear the term “realistic” they often think that it means they should not shoot as high as they normally would under more “optimistic” circumstances. They think it means to settle for mediocrity or to avoid struggle. But really, all it means to be realistic is to have a good idea of the way things are and the way things work. When it comes to making New Year’s resolutions about your health, the thing to understand is how you work.
There is a saying in TCM: “One disease, long life. No disease, short life.” It means that people tend to live longer when they know their problems, because only a fool believes he has no weaknesses. For breaking unhealthy habits, it’s important to pay attention to your weaknesses. What are the circumstances that make you more likely to engage in the unhealthy habit? If you’re a chronic overeater, think about the times when you are most likely to overeat. Think about the situations that promote your bad habit, and avoid them. Know your strengths before you lay down a challenge for yourself.
Here is some advice on achieving your New Year’s resolutions:
1. Make resolutions. People who make them are ten times more likely to achieve positive change (Norcross, Mrykalo & Blagys, 2002).
2. Be realistic. Reflect on what you have tried in the past, what has worked, and what has not worked. If you have succeeded whenever you have made a short list of goals (as opposed to a litany), then make a short list. If you know you forget about your goals come February, set a reminder in your calendar app to revisit your resolutions at 9AM every first of the month.
3. Be practical & actionable. Making a resolution to get in shape is not going to help you. Make a resolution instead to go to the gym and lift every other morning, or to go for a 30 minute walk every morning, or to stop buying red meat, or to drink light beer instead of regular. Make them into concrete, daily tasks that you can clearly see that you did or did not do.
4. Try something new. Some people define insanity as doing the same thing and expecting different results. This is not completely inaccurate. Frankly, there is nothing about this year that is incredibly different from last year and is going to make last year’s method work.
5. Be accountable. Tell other people about what you’re hoping to accomplish. Choose people who care about you and care about you achieving your goals. Tell them that you think it might be hard, and that you would appreciate them checking up on you every once in a while. Alternatively, sign up for something, perhaps a 5k. When you sign up, it’s hard not to show up, and a deadline can do wonders for motivation.
6. Be patient. Heed the wisdom of an old saying: “A thousand mile journey begins with one step.” Note that it does not say, “A thousand mile journey is completed in one step,” or “in one day,” or “before you know it.” Adopt a pace you know you can keep, and don’t try to set any World Records. Even one step every day amounts to seven steps in a week.
Achieving a New Year’s resolution is a simple, but not easy, process that takes reflection, a large number of small steps, and commitment. Be honest with yourself, set practical goals that you know you can actually accomplish every day, and get the support you think you will need. All lasting change takes time, but thankfully you have the whole year.

Stress Reduction is one of the keys to a leading a Mr. Happy life. For your consideration, here are 7 simple suggestions to simply mull over:
- Give up all hope for a better past. Regrets and grudges are a waste of your here and now. As is worrying about an uncertain future. It is how you take advantage of and use your here and now that will determine your future. Act accordingly.
- Apparently not everyone is in your hurry. Yes, I’m talking to you. Traffic is traffic, and it is not our job to teach the world how to drive. And that is just one example. The more we react to things that we cannot affect, the more stress we needlessly inject into our daily life.
- Avoid the absurd and unnecessary. Arguing over politics has as much chance of leading to a change in either party’s perspective as arguing over religious beliefs. So what's the point? There is far too much self-induced and misdirected anger in America today. You have better things to do. Start by turning off cable news.
- Meditate, don’t medicate. If the term “meditation” seems too New Age to you despite it being an ancient practice, then let’s simply refer to it as gathering your thoughts. A few moments each day unplugged and off the grid will not only lower your stress level but will boost your available energy level.
- But definitely naturally medicate. Tap into the powerful benefits of exercise, and enjoy life riding a wave of dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin and adrenaline: all so good that it is hard to believe they are both free and legal. The fitter you get, the less you will crave other stimulants that actually further stress your body and increase your stress levels.
- Focus on your priorities. Understand what truly matters to you, and make certain that you are investing your time and energy accordingly. Recognize the difference between being busy and being successful. Set and act upon priorities that make sense for you. Otherwise, others will set your priorities for you. Are you using your time and energy to pursue what you value most? If the first thing you do upon arriving at work is to check and clear your e-mail inbox, what does that suggest?
- Life is far simpler than we allow it to be. “No drama” is my mantra in life and at work, but don’t get me wrong: I am a work in progress, and that's on a good day. That aside, before you get upset about something, ask yourself if you will even remember the issue in two weeks' time. If not, just let it go. In general, lighten up, focus on the here and now, pursue what matters most to you, and don't forget to have a great time along the way.

When asked in a classic Rolling Stone interview what he had learned about himself while going through a recent divorce, an introspective Carlos Santana offered “… one thing I have discovered is that I don't need no damn Viagra, that's for damn sure.”
Perhaps you don’t either! Kidding aside for a moment, any erosion in your sexual health and function is no laughing matter. There are effective (and cost-effective) ways to improve your sexual health, function, and satisfaction that you may want to consider, without resorting to ED drugs:
- Your erectile function is a “canary in the coal mine” indicator of possible cardiovascular disease. Before doing anything else, please take the time to rule out this possibility.
- Stop smoking! Among the myriad of problems caused by smoking is arterial damage that contributes to erectile dysfunction. Enough said.
- Reduce your consumption of alcohol and of caffeine as either in excess interferes with your ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
- Get some sleep since nocturnal erections help you to maintain penile health and to offset the daily stress on your body that contributes to erectile problems.
- Get in better shape. Apparently a great way to improve your sex life is to be someone that someone else might actually want to sleep with. And better fitness leads to better circulation, and better circulation leads to better…you guessed it.
- Strengthen your pelvic floor muscles by performing a few sets of Kegels every day. Strong pelvic muscle support healthy sexual function. During a conference call, while driving your car, while reading this sentence, … no one will be the wiser (so long as you do not count out loud).
- Consider acupuncture. No, no, the needles do not go there. It is proven to work, particularly for men who may in part be struggling with performance anxiety.
- Increase your nitric oxide levels. Why? How? Well, this is one of the happy benefits of Mr. Happy. It is designed to in part boost both your nitric oxide and anti-oxidant levels. Why both? Nitric oxide effectively dilates your blood vessels, but free radicals decrease your nitric oxide levels.
